note issue are different. For this among

other reasons I thought it quite impossible to say anything definite to the Chartered

Bank without consulting the Governor of Hong Kong and also the Currency Committee, who

will have to consider very shortly the report

of the Home Kong Currency Commission. I there-

fore think that we must arrange a very early

meeting of the Currency Committee to settle this particular question of the note issue

of the Chartered Bank. I sent the telegram

to Hong Kong yesterday without consulting you

as the matter was urgent and I felt sure that

you would agree.
